Press Release 15 March 1999
VISIT TO PENRITH
Professor Wiiliam Brown, a member of the Low Pay Commission, will be visiting the Penrith area on Monday, 22 March as part of a fact-finding tour before the introduction of the National Minimum Wage on 1 April.
Professor Brown will also be the main speaker at the ‘Implementing the Statutory National Minimum Wage’ seminar for employers and other organisations supporting local jobs, which takes place at the Redhills premises of Business Link Cumbria (Eden).
Earlier in the day Professor Brown will visit two major local employers: Westmoreland Motorway Services at Tebay; and Fellside Foods in Shap, part of the Perkins Frozen Foods Group.
The seminar and Professor Brown’s visit combine to provide an important opportunity to raise awareness within the local community about all aspects of the National Minimum Wage and gives local employers and workers a chance to make their views known directly to a Commissioner about the social and economic implications.
Professor Brown is available to speak to media representatives both in advance of, and during, his time in Penrith. His full itinerary is:
9.45 a.m. Westmorland Motorway Services at Shap, north of Junction 38 of the M6 motorway.
11.30 a.m. Fellside Foods on the A6 at Shap, just north of Junction 39 on the M6.
2.00 p.m. ‘Implementing the Statutory Minimum Wage’. Seminar to be held at Business Link Cumbria (Eden), Rural Enterprise Centre, Redhills, Penrith.
