Press Release 17 October 2000
LOW PAY COMMISSIONERS VISIT BRADFORD AND LEEDS– THE MINIMUM WAGE WHAT NEXT?
The Chairman and two Low Pay Commissioners will visit Bradford and Leeds on Thursday 19 October to listen to the experiences of those on low pay and views about the impact of the minimum wage from workers, homeworkers, employers and those advising low-paid workers.
George Bain, Willy Brown and David Coats will be meeting local people at the Girlington Advice Centre, Bradford and the National Group on Homeworking in Leeds to find out how the national minimum wage has affected them and whether they think it should be raised.
The Prime Minister and Trade and Industry Secretary have asked the Commission to monitor the minimum wage and produce a report by July 2001. They will recommend whether there is a case for increasing the main wage rate and if so by how much.
George Bain said
"The introduction of the minimum wage last year aimed to benefit low-paid workers. I welcome the opportunity to listen to what people here in Yorkshire have to say about how the minimum wage has affected them so far and whether it is time it was increased."
Commissioners will be happy to speak to the press at the Hilton Hotel, Bradford….before 9.30 on Thursday 19 October.
